This page introduces the collection of sound action recordings and provides links to its main category pages. No sound files are directly linked to from this page.
Sound action recordings are so named because they're of sounds which are meant to have an effect on people's behaviour. They include ones made by lone individuals as well as situations where many people make sounds together for some common goal. Often the recordings feature voices, either live or recorded, but sirens, bells, fireworks and instruments also appear.
The recordings are all in MP3 format and range from fifteen seconds to ten minutes long. The large majority, however, last between one and three minutes with file sizes of two to five megabytes. Every recording has a descriptive filename which acts as a direct link to the sound file, allowing playback by your computer's default media player.
There are five main categories: economic, officialdom, political, religious, and social. Each category has its own page and is divided into sub-categories. Below is a list of the main categories and their sub-categories with a link for each one.
Recordings in the Economic category are organised into the following nine sub-categories:
Auctioneers. Charity and fundraising. Fairgrounds. Hustlers and beggars. In-store announcements. Market traders. Newspaper and other street sellers. Street entertainers. Tour guides.
Recordings in the Officialdom category are organised into the following four sub-categories:
Non verbal signals. Other recorded announcements. Public transport announcements. Queueing systems.
Recordings in the Political category are organised into the following three sub-categories:
Demonstrations. March for the Alternative 2011. Rioting and disorder.
Recordings in the Religious category are organised into the following four sub-categories:
