LONDON UNSEEN

INTRODUCTION

London Unseen is intended to be a short series of sound maps in which sighted users will be presented with virtually no geographical information except the positions of the recording points relative to one another, and the distances between them depicted as walking times in minutes. It is assumed that walking speed is two-and-a-half miles or four kilometers an hour and that there are no obstacles along the way. In practice, it can take two or three times as long to get from one point to another due to the presence of buildings, busy roads and so forth. Each area represented is kept anonymous by being given a codename.

PITCAIRN

The graphic sound map consists of 36 icons arranged in six rows of six icons. Each icon is a different line drawing which can be one of four colours: red, yellow, blue or grey. The individual sound files listed here are organised by row and, within each row, by the recording's position from the left. The filenames do not correspond with this order, however, and reflect the sequence in which I originally recorded them. Each recording is one minute long and they were made during the course of a Saturday evening. The whole area would take just over five minutes to walk across as the crow flies.

LUNDY

The graphic version of this soundmap depicts a stylised square honeycomb with grey and red bees crawling over its surface. Clicking on any one of the 37 red bees makes a one-minute recording play for that particular location. The recording locations, unlike those in Pitcairn, form a haphazard array but there is a trend for their file numbers to plot a rough anticlockwise course, beginning in the south-east corner of the map area. The whole area depicted would take around 20 minutes to walk across from north to south or east to west.
