Street cries of the world

Street cries were once a popular subject of songs and literature in Britain, continental Europe and elsewhere. Each month from 2018 onwards I'll be scanning and transcribing publications to build this collection.

PEPYS COLLECTION: THE CRIES OF LONDON

These woodcut prints, with the figures’ individual titles added by hand, are among the collections of Samuel Pepys held at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The scholar Sean Shesgreen estimates they were made around 1620, and they comprise the oldest of three surviving sets. This set is untitled, but a later one is called The Cries of London.
